Hugo Maurice Julien Claus (Brugge, 5 april 1929 Antwerpen, 19 maart 2008) was een Vlaams dichter, schrijver, kunstschilder en filmmaker. Hij was de meest bekroonde auteur uit het Nederlandse taalgebied. In de loop van zijn lange carrière schreef Claus duizenden gedichten, tientallen toneelstukken en diverse romans, waarvan de bekendste zijn meesterwerk Het verdriet van België.
