Kissi kőfaragás. Kétalakos sírfigura, korának megfelelő állapotban, Guinea, 16-19. század ?. m: 28,5 cm. A nyugat-afrikai Sierra Leonéban élő Kissi törzs tagjai általában úgy tartják, hogy egy ősi szellemet, az élők és az istenek közötti közvetítőt jelképez. Egy másik felfogás szerint egy termést irányító szellemet ábrázol, egy szentélyben elhelyezett képmást, amely a jó termést hivatott biztosítani. Egy másik felfogás szerint a gonosz szellemek távoltartására használták. Lehetetlen pontosan megmondani, hogy miért is készültek ezek a szobrok. Évszázadokkal ezelőtt az ősök imádata gyakori volt a Kissi nép körében, a szobrokat a falu vezetői rendszeresen felajánlásokkal ajándékozták meg, és mindenféle eszközt használtak a boszorkányság és a rosszindulatú szellemek elhárítására. / It?s generally believed to represent an ancestral spirit, a mediator between the living and the divine. Another school of thought suggests it represents a spirit governing crops, an effigy placed in a shrine to insure a good harvest. Still another suggests it was used to keep evil spirits away. It?s impossible to say exactly why this statue was created. Centuries ago ancestor worship was common among the Kissi, statues were regularly presented with offerings by village headmen, and all sorts of devices were used to ward off witchcraft and counteract malevolent spirits.
