Philatelic Series CD 33
Pre-Victorian Postage Stamps &
Franks
Ancient and Artistic and
For The Most Part English
by G. A. Foster, 1910.
There are
not many books on this exciting area...
Includes 119 types of stamps/franks illustrated (many in
colour),
all described & priced, with
well-written background/history.
This book looks at the old hand impressed postage stamps and
franks, being predecessors to the gummed labels (Penny Black etc)
for the prepayment of postage. These should not be confused with
postmarks, and notifications impressed on letters indicating that
there is further postage to pay. Beginning with the earliest stamps
of William Docwra (1680), the postage stamps of the proceeding
years are covered in chronological order. The second part of the
book covers ´Franks´ or ´Free´ marks, both English and Irish,
during the period ~1760-1839 when this system was enjoyed by MPs
and officers of state.
There are 119 large red and black illustrations - each
showing faithful reproductions of the stamp/frank - the author is
outspoken regarding his distaste for the poorer reproductions found
in some other (un-named) books!
The final portion of this book forms a priced catalogue giving a
price for every one of the 73 postage stamps and 46 franks
illustrated and described in the previous chapters, helpfully
listed with page number, figure, face value, year, reign etc. This
provides a useful guide to rarity.
